DL Tim Bulman, WR Jabar Gaffney, WR Donte’ Stallworth, DB Ross Ventrone and DL Gerard Warren were all released. DB Will Allen, S Josh Barrett and FB Spencer Larsen were placed on injured reserve. TE Jake Ballard and DL Myron Pryor were placed on the Reserve/PUP list. Rookie free agent OL Markus Zusevics was placed on the Reserve/Non Football Injury List.
The Flying Elvii now currently have eight WR's listed on the roster: Deion Branch, Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Julian Edelman, Kerry Taylor, Jesse Holley, and special team ace Matthew Slater.
FVP is surprised that both Gaffney and Stallworth were released at this point. The thought process here was that one would break into the roster, if not both. Welker and Lloyd are locks, and you have to figure that Edelman and Branch are solid bets. Slater was a pro-bowler for special teams, so he has to be thought of as a lock as well. Last season, the Pats carried five WR's, so it comes down to Taylor and Holley either making the roster ahead of Edleman or Branch, or one of them making the practice squad.
Of course, Belichick may throw a curve ball as well. Last season, New England carried two TE's, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Currently, Daniel Fells, Alex Silvestro, Visanthe Shiancoe and rookie Urban Tyler are all still on the roster. Perhaps The Hoodie plans on going with more TE's as offenses in the NFL continue to evolve in that direction. Certainly Henandez's extension could be looked at as more of a "receiver" type of pay day than a TE. Either way, you can bet that Belichick will do the unexpected, as he always does. .....READ MORE IN SPORTS AT FANVIEWPOINT.COM.....
