Goffstown - On Saturday, March 6th, Democrats of all generations met at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church on Mast Rd. to elect new town officers, discuss local election matters, and begin to plot a strategy to keep New Hampshire's economy strong and its future bright.
State Representative Kevin Hodges, the only Democrat to represent Hillsborough district 7 (which includes Goffstown and Weare), was very pleased with the turnout. "On a beautiful day like we had, it was very invigorating to see Democrats and progressive Independents of all ages and experience levels come together with enthusiasm and good ideas."
The newly-elected officers are as follows: Tim McKernan - chair, Matt Monahan - vice-chair, Kimberly Peace - secretary, and Dick Bruno - Treasurer. As well, the group elected five delegates at large to the state Democratic convention.
Tim McKernan, a long time advocate for health care in New Hampshire, said, "I look forward to working with Matt, Kimberly and Dick -- all of whom bring a wealth of knowledge and experience on local and state issues -- and I know that voters will support our candidates in November because the Democratic majorities in Concord have worked with Governor Lynch to solve this economic crisis." He added, "We'll be focusing on grassroots politics and we encourage all Goffstown residents to be involved with the Democratic committee as we prepare for the mid-term election."
Secretary Kimberly Peace, chair of the Goffstown Conservation Commission, said, "We'll be using new technology to engage voters and support our candidates. We already have a new
Goffstown NH Democrats facebook page!"
Because Goffstown's state representative district includes the town of Weare, the Goffstown Democratic committee will meet with the Weare Democrats and work together on local campaigns.
According to vice-chair Matt Monahan, the cooperation just makes sense. "With so much in common and so many shared environmental and economic resources, we feel that cooperation will only make us stronger."
"And it makes running for office, especially state representative, that much easier," explained Rep. Hodges, the only Democrat ever to be elected from the two-town district. "As long as Goffstown and Weare are together in a state rep. district, we'll be working hand in hand--it's the Democratic way," he added.
The next meeting of the Goffstown Democrats will be take place on Monday, April 19 and Goffstown and Weare residents alike are welcome to attend. Details will be announced closer to the meeting.
